Transforming Glycerin By-Products into Valuable Light Oils

One of the key steps in this process is the removal of MONG (Matter Organic Non-Glycerin) from the crude glycerin feed. MONG consists of organic impurities, including free fatty acids, triglycerides, polymeric glycerol, and other residues, all of which are separated during the distillation of crude glycerin.
While MONG lowers the quality of glycerin, its removal significantly enhances the final product’s purity. The distilled glycerin that results from this process has improved taste, color, and odor. Additionally, removing MONG boosts the overall yield of glycerin, ensuring that our product meets the highest standards of quality.
Crude glycerin typically contains around 3% to 5% MONG, and by eliminating this, we can produce glycerin with a far greater degree of refinement.
But while MONG can be a negative factor for glycerin, it has value in other markets, particularly as light oil. This by-product of the refining process is highly sought after by industries such as biodiesel production, animal feed, and other industrial applications. At Quantum Products, we are able to separate and collect approximately 500 gallons of light oil each month,
which is then available for sale at market prices.
